Port Antonio Jamaica W.I.

Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles, 240 kilometres (150 mi) in length and as much as 85 kilometres (50 mi) in width situated in the Caribbean Sea. It is 635 kilometres (391 mi) east of the Central American mainland, 150 kilometres (93 mi) south of Cuba, and 180 kilometres (112 mi) west of the island of Hispaniola, on which Haiti and the Dominican Republic are situated. It is the third most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada.

Portland with its capital town Port Antonio, is a parish located on Jamaica's northeast coast. It is situated to the north of St. Thomas, and the east of St. Mary in Surrey County. It is one of the rural areas of Jamaica and is known for its great beaches.

The parish is situated at latitude 18°10' N and longitude 75°27'W. It extends from the highest peaks of the Blue Mountains, 2256 meters above sea-level, down to the north coast, and is noted for its fertile soil, beautiful scenery, and fine beaches. The parish lies in the direct path of the northeast trade winds and the Blue Mountain ridge to its south traps the moisture causing the parish to have the highest rainfall in the island. Port Antonio, its chief town and capital, has two harbours, the western one being sheltered by a small islet, Navy Island. Portland covers an area of 814 square kilometres, making it Jamaica's seventh largest parish. The parish has a variety of complex landforms; the entire coastline is dotted with caves, bays, rivers, waterfalls and hills. There are fourteen caves, which include those at Buff Bay, Orange Bay, Hope Bay, Port Antonio, Boston Bay, Long Bay, Innis Bay and Nonsuch. There are also 17 rivers which form a network throughout the parish. The largest are the Rio Grande, Buff Bay and Hectors Rivers.

Portland enjoys large attractivity amongst high level tourists and foreign residents, mainly from the US and England who are seeking for luxurious resort and quiet, unexplored areas.

The Population of Jamaica is estimated 2.8 Mil. The Population of Portland is an estimated 82.000, 15.000 of which live in the capital town of the Parish of Portland.


Port Antonio is located on the northeast end of Jamaica. The way from Kingston is approximately 2-3 Hours over the Blue Mountains or the Coast side road (East end of Jamaica). Currently Port Antonio takes advantages out of a large Government program enhancing the infrastructure. Within the next 2 years Port Antonio will get large infrastructure investments which will give it much better access to Kingston and to Ocho Rios the regional capital.

Although the capital of the parish, Port Antonio, is an urban centre the environment is characteristic of a rural area, and it is known for some of Jamaica!s great beaches and naturally preserved landscapes. Tourism has played an integral role in the development of Portland. This first came to prominence during the mid 19th century with the large-scale exportation of banana. Banana boats returning from Boston, USA brought the first tourists to Jamaica, then Errol Flynn bought Navy Island and entertained many of his Hollywood friends there, making Port Antonio a playground for the rich and famous. 

Portland remains an attraction for the wealthy, many of whom own property and second homes there. A number of tourist facilities exist like Trident Villas and Hotel, Jamaica Palace, Dragon Bay Villas, Goblin Hill Hotel, Mocking Bird Hill and natural attractions such as Frenchman!s Cove, Boston Bay and the Blue Lagoon. Due to its abundance of natural resources, small scale but high-end development, and the relatively quiet ambience of the parish, Portland is very attractive to persons wishing to invest in luxurious real estate.

The site is lokated on a hill at the south end of Turtle Crawl Harbour (Bay) in Anchovy, approx. 2 miles east of Port Antonio, Jamaica. The site is directly accessible from the main road A-4.

The Trident Hotel, Jamaica Palace Hotel, Frenchman’s Cove (Beach) and San San Resort (Villas) are in close proximity to the site. The Blue Lagoon and the Villas close to are 10 min drive to the site.
